Geek Girl Review

When I was at the clothes show in December I heard about a new book which was set to come out in February called Geek Girl, it sounded so good and I knew straight away I needed to get my hands on it and review it for my readers, thanks to the kind people at Harper Collins I was provided with a little Geek Girl goody bag containing a manuscript. I have been waiting about a month until today to post my review before the official release of it tomorrow, Thursday 28th.

Please note Harper Collins provided this manuscript to me free of charge in return for an honest review.

15 year old Harriet Manners knows a lot of things. She knows that a cat has 32 muscles in each ear, a "jiffy" lasts 1/100th of a second, and the average person laughs 15 times per day. What she isn't quite so sure about is why nobody at school seems to like her very much. So when she's spotted by a top model agent, Harriet grabs the chance to reinvent herself. Even if it means stealing her Best Friend's dream, incurring the wrath of her arch enemy Alexa, and repeatedly humiliating herself in front of the impossibly handsome supermodel Nick. Even if it means lying to the people she loves.

As Harriet veers from one couture disaster to the next with the help of her overly enthusiastic father and her peer stalker, Toby, she begins to realise that the world of fashion doesn't seem to like her any more than the real world did.
And as her old life starts to fall apart, the question is: will Harriet be able to transform herself before she ruins everything?

From the first page I fell in love and could not put the book down, filled with giggles and smiles, Holly Smale's Geek Girl is one of the most enjoyable books I have read for a while with a strong message of not being afraid to be who you are. It was one of those books I could imagine recording the audio version or making a film out of because I felt I related to it so much.

The main character, Harriet Manners, truly proved herself to be a geek with her interesting facts and use of intelligent words along with her bubbly and kind personality she made a lovable character who I learnt a lot from and strongly related to.

I also fell in love with the character of Nick who really brought Harriet out of her shell and seemed to be a fun lovable boy, as soon as he was out of the story I would be flicking through the pages in hope he would return shortly. Nat was a great best friend character and really seemed to connect with Harriet even with their differences, she is the kind of character you would hope a best friend to be, even if they fight they are still there for each other and will be laughing about it the next day. Toby is one of those funny awkward characters that we can all relate to a person we know, he added a lot of humor to the story and his Harriet stalking skills were on point.

I couldn't get given glasses without taking a few stupid photos

The plot was very realistic and had many aspects that every teenage girl could relate too, in addition to this the first person point of view created an almost diary like story that felt very lifelike and when I shut the book   I missed being in Harriet's world.

I would definitely recommend this book to girls of 12+ who like a nice cutesy book to relax too and likes a good laugh. It is a unique story line which I personally like to get away from the traditional modern teen-y books. I would probably give Geek Girl a 9/10.

Geek Girl by Holly Smale is out tomorrow, Thursday 28th February in bookstores and for download.

Also make sure you visit the Geek Girl Facebook page where you can find out more about the book, author and enter great competitions to win copies of the book and to become the next Geek Girl covergirl.

I Blame One Direction

I cant believe it is February and I have already broke one of my new years resolutions, to post every week. However I do have a good reason. On Saturday I went up to London with my Dad to what I thought was going to be his old work reunion, at about 5pm on Saturday my father handed me an envelope which contained a One direction ticket for their 12.30 concert at the O2 the next day. I will write more about it in a few days time however I thought I needed to give a quick explanation on why I did not post anything on Sunday like I usually do, but it was worth it

Little Mix Tour!

I'm finally on half term and I really feel like I need it, I have been ill for the past week with a cold, actually ever since I went to see Little Mix on Monday, whether being ill was anything to do with the fact I was sat outside the stage doors for about 3ish hours in my school pe kit of shorts and a top in usual British weather I don't know but it was fun.

So as you can probably guess from the title and that mini paragraph, on Monday I went to see Little Mix on their tour and it was AMAZING! I went with my friends Ellie and India. We left school and got the bus straight to the venue (right after our pe lesson, hence the pe kit) where we waited from about 4 O'Clock for the girls to come out. Unfortunately due to the cold weather, they did not come out because it could have damaged their voices but both support acts came out. Me and India got very cold and eventually got changed so I did not get a photo with the Mend but we managed to have a little chat. However when Reconnected came out I got a photo and all 3 of the boys autographs, they were so lovely! This is Ellie and I with Harry,  I look very short and my coat is being weird but I was cold.

This picture belongs to Ellie

When they went back in to prepare to go on stage we also decided to go an find our seats. I though we were going to be sat about 11 rows back in the middle and was so excited, but when we found our seats we were just 2 rows back on the side, it was so close!

All 3 of us were getting so excited and then the support acts came on stage which only made us more excited for the girls to come on.

About 15 mins earlier than they were supposed to Little Mix appeared on stage and the whole venue was screaming, it was such a good atmosphere and to see them so close was surreal. They sang loads of their own songs as well as covers, I'm pretty sure all the girls waved at us as each time they walked towards us we were waving like crazy.

Although it was a seated concert, pretty much everybody was standing, as well as crying and screaming. The night went by so fast and I just wish I could go back because it was so good. If I had the chance to see Little Mix again, without a doubt I would because they were even better live!

Valentine's Day Nails

You can't walk into a shop without being hit in the face with a huge pink teddy bear holding a soppy 'I Love You' sign which only means one thing, it's Valentines Day; well it is on Thursday. This Valentine's for the first time I'm actually going out, no need to get excited though it's with about 60 other girls for a GCSE theatre trip to see Twelfth Night. However many of you may be going out whether it's with friends, family or that special someone and you need to have beautiful nails for the occasion.

Here's the glitch. I had painted and photographed my nails and prepared to upload when my cable broke and trying to keep to my New Year's resolution of posting every week I came up with an ingenious idea. I'm going to post my favourite Valentine's nail from Pinterest, sorry not very imaginative.

I love these matte nails that look just like one of my favourite sweets Love Hearts from Polish Hoarder Disorder

These nails combine two of my favourite nail tip-idea thingymabobs, ombre and reinforcement stickers, cleverly though of by Jenna Beth.

I love how simple these nails are but they look amazing, well done to I feel polished they would look so cute if you changed the orange for pink!

These are probably the simplest and there are so many variations, perfect nails in no time, from my favourite beauty blog, The Beauty Department.

Sorry about the glitch, but I hope you have a great Valentines Day, whether you are in the theatre with me, out with your loved one or staying at home.
